When Quality Matters

The Switch

Hi, I forgot to tell you something you must really watch out for.
The call it the switch.
It can start from about 6 month onwards.

I donīt know which kind of dogs you have experience with but the Boerboels is very calm but extremely protective. And that can catch you off guard. They donīt over react but they have certain situation and people they donīt like at all. And they go for them.

We had three situation so far:
First we were on Holiday in the cape. We stayed in some friends house which was not in the nicest of all areas. As the door bell rang my wife opened the door. On the outside she found a tooth less, scaly individual. As she saw him she quickly slammed the sliding security door. The guy got very excited about the situation. And started talking nonsense: "Hi pretty girl who is your daddy". He just had said the who of that sentence as the door which my wife had be holding got ripped out of hand by Kekoa jumping straight of the couch, flying straight through my wife and that door. He went stood up on the security gate which was fortunately closed. Shaking it with his front feet. Growling and foaming.
I think the guy ran 50m in 2 secs and never came back.
Kekoa who was just 6 month old. Got of the gate, waved his little tails and went back to sleep on the coach.

Story number two:
I rescued a BB bitch from a Kennel just before she was supposed to get shot. Now she is our alpha bitch by the name of Lara. She is very calm and sweet. She doesnīt bark or growl. In public she always leaves an shy and intimidated impression. But I am 100% sure that she fully is aware of that fact that I saved her live.
Just recently we went into the park. There we have to go down to the river, than up and around some big bushes. This day as usual the dogs drink in the river. I am busy writing some smsīs on my mobil. As I walk around the bushes I encounter 3 drunk men. Not seeing my dogs they think I am the perfect victim. The one steps forward putting his hand pocket pretending to have knife. "Give me your mobil and your mo.... In that moment I only saw Lara and Kekoa jumping from behind me. Kekoa impacted on the one guys chest which made him fly back for a couple a metres, Lara bit 4 light holes into the guys throat. Fortunately I just called her off just before she was about to shake. In the mean while my two youngsters were torturing the third guys calws.
Eventually they all nicely waited in the river. I never saw anybody who was so happy to see the cops arresting them.
The dogs came back to me licked my hands and we continued our walk as if nothing had ever happening.

Third story:
Just yesterday we went to another park. As normally there were a group of drunk individual sitting around. Normally terrified of dogs but when they drunk they think they can fly.
They were about 50m away. As I walk past note: This time they could see all my dogs, which were of the lead!!
Not believing my eyes I noticed one of them getting up and walking straight towards me. Swearing and acting. Somehow trying to prove himself to the rest of the group.
I am trying to walk away. About 10m away from he stops and picks up some bottles of alcohol which they were hiding in the grass. I watched Lara as he bends over to pick up the bottles. She looks scared and it seems like she wants to run away. She walks three steps sideward.
The guy drinks a zip and swears at me. The moment he says what ever he said Lara and Kekoa go off likes rockets.
Thank god we spend the time in dog school.
And about for 4 metres before they get hold of them I call them off and walk away. The guy didīto really feel like saying to much anymore.

They never overreacted. All the situations were very tense and ugly. But if you donīto know the Character of he BB and you donīto have the control over the dog situation can end differently. It comes without warning. Just like a bush fire.

Donīto get the wrong impression. Any body can come on our premises as long as we are there. They are loving and caring with us and children. I take my dogs with me a lot. They are friendly. Everybody can pet them or hold them. Even the African Security guard at our bank is always extremely happy to see us and hold my dogs as long as I do my banking.
But they donīto like drunken people at all and nobody should threaten you or even use a strong tone of voice.

Beautiful characters. They make me sleep and live in Johannesburg very calmly.
