When Quality Matters

Misconseptions about the Boerboel

"The less white a Boerboel has the higher he will be graded."

SABT:
The two same dogs, the one is fully in one of the allowed colours and the other one has less than one third white will score exactly the same percentages. If there is some white on the feed the dog might score a norm instead of a plus which will be a deduction 0.3%-0.5% of the total score.
HBSA:
All colours are permitted as long as the pigmentation is good.

"The higher the percentage the better the dog is."

The percentage give an indication on how the dog confirms to the breed standard. What you canīt see from the total score is where the weaknesses of the dog lie. There very important components which you can see of the total score. Hips, Elbows, Hyperplasia, Prolapse and Temperament etc.

"Two dogs of 90% will breed puppies of 90%"

There is nothing more untrue than this particular misconception. Successful breeding does not rely percentage. It depends on how well the breeder understands the bloodlines of the particular breeding dogs. The right combination is the secret to a strong litter. There are many cases where two dogs under 80% breed a champion and two high graded dogs breed puppies under 80%. Of course to high graded dogs will make an success if the combination is right but it is not granted.
The same applies to hips. Some dogs with good hips breed bad hips and some dogs with HD donīt breed it either. But still better buy puppies from dogs with 0/0 or 1/1.

"Reputable breeders only breed good dogs"

Reputable breeders breed more better dogs than other people and market themselves well.

"The faster my puppy grows the better it is"

Especially in the US Market very big and very fast growing dog is often requested. All Giant breed dogs are very prone to have growth problems. The dog might grow fast but a its price. Joint-, movement and organ problems. It is important to give the dog the right time to grow. Overfeeding and over exercising can cause serious problems. Therefore in the long run it pays to keep the dog lean.

"The bigger the BB the Better"

The boerboel is a strong and agile working dog. There to much weigh can decrease his ability to work and to protect. Incorrect to and fast seize breeding causes mayor health problems.

" A good protection dog must be aggressive"
" What protection could the dog offer you if you have to lock it away everytime some strangers enters the property?"

A good protection dog knows the difference between friend and enemy and reacts accordingly. It also must be fully trained and highly obedient. See the switch.
