The Broholmer Alf
Breed: Broholmer
Name: Alf
Pet-name: Whatever his mother can think of in a given situation, –but mostly Alf.
Sex: Male
Born: 2/7-1996
Sire: Ask
Dam: Sif
Breeder: Lis Rogild, Denmark.
Owner: Siri Dybsand Stürup, Denmark – www.siris.k-nettet.dk
Alf was born 7th of july 1996. Living together with me (Siri) and the young female Knirke (born 29/4-03) –
one of the few black Broholmers. Until november also Ursa was living with us until she passed away too
soon only 7 years old.
Alf is not one of the tallest Broholmers, only 72 cm. but he certainly has the broad chest, and
he is very good of type and temperament. A dominant male alright – toward other males – but a guy has to take care
of his ladys – Right.
He is just as gentle with small pups of both dog and human kind.
Alf together with my young black Broholmer female Knirke (at about 8 months of age).
Alf was one of 2 males in a litter of only 3 pups. He was born in the summer and spent most days outside in the
shade in the garden. When 5 weeks old his breeder Lis got concerned – he was not eating anything during the day.
He was gaining weight so this was strange. Lis discovered one night at 2 o’clock the reason for this. Alfs mother
Sif was laying sleeping on her back snoring. While his mother was sleeping Alf emptied the milky-bar and therefore
he didn’t need to eat during the day. Alf still likes to eat late at night and sometimes saves some of his diner for
a late-night snack.
The Broholmer is a calm and gentle dog. For the first 2½ years this was not exactly the way to discripe Alf – He was
actually a D.A.M.P–Dog. This has changed somewhat with Alf getting older.
Alf is a good looking Broholmer – well put together only a little on the small side in highth which he compensates
for in his broad chest and neck. Weight: 62 kg. Height: 72cm – and he is 76 cm round the neck !
Alf was never used in breeding – he is crypthochid and therefore not allowed. To bad.

The Broholmer:
As a type this breed has been known since the Middle Ages, when it was used for hunting (stag-hunting). Later on it was
used mainly as guard dog for large farms and manors. At the end of the 18th century these dogs were purebred and increased
in number thanks to the Royal Game keeper Sehested of Broholm, from where the breed has inherited its name.
After the Second World War the breed became almost extinct, but around 1975 a group of committed people - later organized
as «The Broholmer Society» - supported by the Danish Kennel Club, began the work of reviving the breed.
The Broholmer is a dog of large size, rectangular and strongly built, with a composed and powerful movement.
Its appearance is dominated by the powerful forequarters. The head is massive and wide, the neck is sturdy with some
loose skin, the chest is broad and deep. At rest the head is carried rather low and stooping, and the tail is hanging
down sabrelike. When moving, the tail is carried higher, but not over the topline. When the dog is attentive or aroused,
the head is carried higher and the tail is raised above horizontal.
The temperament is described as: calm, good tempered, friendly, yet watchful. Must show great self-confidence.
You find the Broholmer in 3 colours: Wheat with darker mask, Fawn (or golden) and Black.
For all 3 colour variations white breast, toes and tailtip are allowed.
