Colour: Lion-colored; yellow, red, reddish brown, sandy, often with black tips on the coat. Always a black mask. Present situation: Most common in Scandinavia, France and Germany. Additional info: Made in the 1830-40's by Heinrich Essig (1808-1889), crossing Landseer Newfoundland, Saint Bernard & Pyrenean Mountain Dog. The Leonberger was created to resemble the lion in the coat of arms of the town Leonberg in Germany. |
