Name: Gran Mastin de Borinquen Other name: Puerto Rican Mastiff, Mastin Borincano, Becerillo de Borinquen, Perro Barsino de Hacienda. Country/region of origin: Puerto Rico. Date of origin: Spanish colonial times. Recovered in the 1970's. Height: Males: 61-71 cm. (24-28" in), females: 56-66 cm. (22-26 in). Weight: Males: 45-68 kg. (100-150 lbs), females: 41-57 kg. (90-125 lbs). Colour: Negro, leonado, atigredo (barsino) & palomo. (black, red, chestnut & buckskin). Or any of these colors with brindling. Splashes of white permitted, large or small, on head, chest, legs, or tail. Present situation: Very rare. Additional info: The Borinquen Mastiff is a blend of Spanish war Mastiffs, traditional island dogs (Perros Jibaros) and Latin American Molossers, all
brought to the island to protect the settlers against the rebellious Carribean indians. |
