In 1971 Mr. David Leavitt began breeding to restore the Englsih Bulldog to its original standard, after years with dissapointments with the modern English Bulldog and its health problems. After a well recearched line-breeding program he started breeding modern English Bulldogs with American Pit Bull Terriers, American Bulldogs and Bullmastiffs. The dogs he produced contained 50 % English Bulldog (3/6) and the other three breeds in equal parts (1/6).
Although Mr. Leavitt wanted to produce a dog with the physical ability of its ancestors, he did not seek to recreate the violent temperament of the oiginal Bulldogge. The Olde English Bulldogge is not intended to be a dogfighter with the endurance to last for two hours in the pit. Neither should it be aggressive toward other animals.

Unlike their ancestors, today's Olde English Bulldogges are bred for a loyal and loving temperament as much as looks and strength. They are much healthier and sturdier than their modern counterparts, the English Bulldog.

After years of selective line-breeding, a dog that is registered an breeding true has been developed. But buyers beware ! There are many breeders out there who do crosses between the modern English Bulldogs and other breeds, especially the Pit Bull and the Am. Staff and they sell them as Olde English Bulldogge's, taking profit of the name and the breed created by David Leavitt. Only OEBA (Olde English Bulldogge Asspciation) approved breeders are breeding the true and original Olde English Bulldogge created by Leavitt.

The Olde English Bulldogge is a powerful and atlethic dog, far from its show bred English cousin. It should display power and fearlessness in its every move and should be alert and ready to defend its owner if somebody threatens him. In other words as much Bulldog as the Bulldog of England was in the good old days, capable of doing more that sleep and taking a half round in the show ring.
If you are looking for an atlethic and powerful Bulldog the Olde English Bulldogge would be a excellent choise, both as a working dog and as a companion.
