Swedish Champion Nallebjörnen's Leonardo.

The Newfoundland Dog is a huge black dog with a very friendly temperament. It is a dog which will bond will all members of its human human family, and be their faithful companion for all of its life.

The breed is famous for its water rescue ability. In many countries all over the world the interest in doing water rescue work and competitions with the Newfoundland Dog have increased in the latter years. In countries as England and France Newfoundland Dogs are playing an active role as water rescuers which patrols the beaches with their trainers.

In Enland in 1860 the Newfoundland Dog entered a dogshow for the first time, when six dogs of the breed were shown in the dogshow of Birmingham. In 1879 the first Newfoundland Dog was registred with the American Kennel Club, and in 1883 "Sam" became the first American Champion of the breed.

Today almost all Newfoundland Dogs can trace their pedigrees back to a English dog in the 1920's named "Siki", known as an outstanding example of the breed and as an excellent sire.

The average height at the withers for males is 71 cm. (28 in) and a weight of 64-69 kg. (140-150 lbs).
The females has an average height at 66 cm. (26 in) and weights 50-54 kg. (110-120 lbs).
Large size is desirable, but never at the expense of symmetry, structure, and correct gait.

The double coat of the Newfoundland Dog is oily of nature, water-resistant, flat and dense. A short flat coat is reason for disqualifications.
There is disagreement between the UK Kennel Club, the Canadian Kennel Club and the American Kennel Club about the permitted colours of the Landseer. While the Canadian and the UK Kennel Clubs recognize only Black and and Landseer (white and black), the American Kennel Club also allow grey coloured dogs, a colour that calls for a disqualification at the other two clubs.
A splash of white on the chest, toes and tip of tail is acceptable.
The black coloured dogs is dull jet black, and may be tinged with bronze. The brown coloured dogs can be chocolate or bronze. Although most countries now have recognized the black and white Landseer as ECT (European Continental Type) Landseer, the black and white dog can also be found in the traditional Newfoundland Dog, even in the countries that have recognized the ECT Landseer. THe ECT Landseer differs from the black and white Newfoundland Dog especially in structure and temperament.
