The native Maltese name on the Maltese Bulldog is Kelb Tal-Gliet, which means "fighting dog".
This breed was used first and foremost as a fighting dog, and second as a guarddog for the home.
Malta have never been an "overcrowded" island, with just below 400.000 inhabitans in 2002, so we can assume that the Maltese Bulldog never have been very numerous.
The height and weight of the Kelb Tal-Gliet is unknown, but the dogs were reported as a strong and powerful dog with great fighting capabilities.
The colour of the breed is also unknown, but the dog pictured at these pages was fawn in colour with a black mask.
The breed went extinct probably around the 1950's.
