The Moscow Watchdog was made by crossing the Caucasian Ovtcharka with the St. Bernard Dog between the 1950’s and the
1960’s, in the area of the former USSR (actually – Russia). The plan was to moderate a too aggressive and independent
character of the Caucasian Ovtcharka, so the new breed could work togehter with different people.
After a while the Moscow Watchdog started to be used as a watchdog for many objects like factories, industrial plants
and prisons. At present, the Moscow Watchdog are used by the Russian Police Forces (Milicja)
in places where it would be too cold for other ordinary police dogs.
The Russian Orthodox Church has an exclusive right to work on the Moscow Watchdog kennel standard. Actually,
the breed is still not accepted and registered by any kennel club in the World, however the breed standard exists.
