The size of the Maremmano Abruzzese :
Height at withers: males 65-73 cm. (25,5-28,7 in), females 60-68 cm. (23,5-26,7 in).
Weight: males 35-45 kg. (77-99 lbs), females 30-40 kg. (66-88 lbs).

This proud and strong flock guardian is very watchful and has a strong sence of territory, very reserved and destructive to strangers, and it has even a certain degree of independency from its owner. The females is even more shy and mistrusting than the males.
The Maremmano Abruzzese is a dog suited for living in outdoor conditions, as it is indifferent to bad weather. It must of course have the possibility to withdraw into a dry and warm place, if the need should arise. The Maremmano Abruzzese is not weel suited for hot weather.

From time to time the issue of separating the Maremmano Abruzzese into two breeds arise. There are supporters for both opinions, and good points is being presented by both parties. Some claim that it will be impossible to separate the bred into two breeds, after so many years with interbreeding. Why would it be impossible? It was done with the Akita Inu, that was separated into the lighter Akita Inu and the heavier Great Japanese Dog, and as far as I know there are often more differences between specimens of the Maremmano Abruzzese that it is between the two Akita Inu variants.

The coat of the Maremmano Abruzzese is always white. Shades of ivory, pale orange or lemon are tolerated, but only in a less degree. The idea of a white dog is that the shepherd should be able to distinguist between the dog and the wolf.
The length of the coat is up to 8 cm. (3,1 in), at certain areas of the body. Undercoat only in the winter.
