A story about the Rottweiler Rocky
by Crystal Rogers
This is for my much beloved Rottie Rocky.
Rocky's 13 now and is nearing the end of his life. He began life as a show dog, but when it was discovered that he
had hip dysplasia he was neutered and we adopted his as a pet. We knew he was special from the beginning! He was
so easy to train that I thought "who was training who!" He has always loved all of our family, and is friendly to
anyone we allow on our property. When he was much younger we had to move and leave Rocky with my parents until we
were settled into our new home. My mom is Rocky's most special friend, and she took him regularly to run errands
around town.
While he stayed with my parents mom taught Rocky to speak on command by a slight hand signal ,and a couple of other
cute tricks.
My father is on heart medication and has to have his medicine at all times, and it happened that mom and Rocky had
to make a drug store visit that day to pick it up. While mom was in the drug store Rocky remained in the truck
watching for mom to return. While mom was in the store waiting for my dad's meds to be filled she was followed
by two disshevled men thru the store. I must mention that they never approached her until she went to the counter
to get his big bag of meds one guy asked her if she had change for a twenty. She said "no" and left the store...
they followed.
Rocky
Mom seen that they were indeed following and clutched her bag and purse closer to her. She rounded the corner,
and there was Rocky watching and waiting for her in the truck. She made the slight pinching motion that signaled
him to speak and boy did he ever! Along with the simple gesture was another one only she and Rocky knew...She had
taught him to open the truck door and come to a heel next to mom!
So, here comes Rocky barking and growling the entire way, the fearsome Rottweiler, and came to sit next to my small
(but tough) mountain mother. Mom laid one hand on Rock's head, and asked if the two "gentlemen" needed anything.
The guys took one look at mom and Rocky, and decided maybe her bag and drugs weren't worth tackling and already
barking rottweiler. They turned without a word and walked away.
I have no doubt Rocky would have defended mom
on that occassion, and I thank God she had him with her that day.
We, my entire four-footed and two legged family, lives in the mountains of Northeast Tennessee.
To this day Rocky still goes to see my mom and dad on a regular basis. He still thinks of mom as his special best friend,
and he still knows his "cute tricks".
