Even if recognized by the FCI this breed is no longer to be found. The Belgian Mastiff have sadly become extinct and are therefore placed at the suspended list by the FCI.
The primary work for this extinct Mastiff was as a draft dog. The same way as the poor Swiss farmers did use the Grosser & Berner Sennenhund, the poor Belgians did use the Mātin Belge to pull their charts, since they could not afford a horse. In World War I the Belgian army did use Belgian Mastiffs to pull their charts with heavy equipment.
The belgian Mastiff was know to be very friendly with its human family, but almost viscious against strangers.

The Belgian Mastiff was a bobtailed mastiff: this quality was one of his distinguishing characteristics. The colour was brindle or fawn in different shades, with or without a dark mask. White markings was common. The coat was short, smooth, and rather loose fitting. Height of this vanished mastiff was 69-78 cm. (27-30,6 in) his weight 45-50 kg. (99-110 lbs).

I hope that Belgians or other who got information on this breed contacts me. I also hope that Belgians interested in this breed and other molosseres do some research about the Belgian Mastiff.

Belgian troops in 1914, using dogs to pull their heavy equipment.
I consider the first two dogs to be Belgian Mastiffs or at least part Belgian Mastiffs.
