This breed is classified by the FCI under group 1, cattledogs, but it is without doubt a breed that belong to the Molosser group, isolated on the Azores Islands for a long time and have developed its own breed characteristics.

The Cão de Fila is intelligent and quick to learn, and with its agressiveness it is an excellent watch dog.
The history of the Fila de São Miguel, as a breed of its own, starts from the 1800's and it is linked to the other Molosser of the Azores, the Fila da Terceira.
